How is SIP return calculated?

A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) invests a fixed amount every month. This calculator uses the standard future-value formula:

FV = P × [ ((1 + i)n − 1) / i ] × (1 + i)

where P is the monthly instalment, i is the monthly rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n is the number of months. The (1 + i) factor assumes each instalment is invested at the start of the month; you can switch to end-of-month timing. When you add an annual step-up, the calculator simulates each month so every year's higher instalment is compounded correctly.

Example: ₹5,000 a month for 10 years at 12% p.a. invests ₹6,00,000 and grows to about ₹11.6 lakh (start-of-month timing), meaning roughly ₹5.6 lakh of estimated returns.

Frequently asked questions

Are SIP returns guaranteed?

No. Mutual fund returns depend on the market. The expected return you enter is an assumption for illustration, not a promise. Actual returns can be higher or lower, or negative in the short term.

What expected return should I use?

Many planners use 10–12% for diversified equity funds over long periods and 6–8% for debt funds, but past performance does not guarantee the future. Try a few rates to see a realistic range.

What is a step-up SIP?

A step-up (or top-up) SIP increases your monthly instalment by a fixed percentage every year, for example 10%. It lets your investment grow with your income and can raise the final corpus significantly.

What is the difference between SIP and lumpsum?

A SIP spreads your investment over many months, averaging your purchase cost, while a lumpsum invests the whole amount at once. SIPs suit regular income; lumpsum suits a one-time surplus.

How do I find the SIP needed for a goal?

Switch to "SIP needed for a goal", enter your target amount, expected return and time period. The calculator works out the starting monthly SIP (with optional step-up) needed to reach it.

Does this include tax, exit load or expense ratio?

No. The figures are pre-tax and before costs. Tax rules and fund charges change, so check the latest rules or ask a tax professional.
